As our State continues to grow, the Government is challenged with meeting transport infrastructure demands in both metropolitan and regional areas within current funding arrangements.

The State Government is focused on managing the road network to ensure the greatest efficiencies are achieved in terms of capacity, connectivity and equity. Significant funding has also been allocated to expand the road network where necessary.

The iconic Gateway WA project continues on time and on budget. With five grade separated intersections, the project will improve safety and efficiency in one of the State’s most important transport hubs.

Coupled with the recently funded NorthLink project, Perth’s freight corridors will be seen as some of the most productive and efficient road freight systems in Australia.

Perth’s population is growing at almost 3% annually, about twice the national average.

The impact on our already car-dependant city can be seen on the road network in peak periods every day of the week.

There is no single solution to congestion. However, Main Roads, along with Department of Transport and Public Transport Authority, is developing a suite of responses to the issue.

It is clear the community demands more from transport services in terms of accurate and reliable traffic and traveller information, as well as an efficient and sustainable network.

Innovative tools, such as social media, the Right Move Perth smartphone app and media partnerships all play a role in delivering real time information to Perth road users.

As we strive to deliver a world class transport system in Western Australia, we must refer back to the long-term planning goals in Directions 2031 and Beyond. The strategy aims to accommodate a population of 3.5 million in a compact and environmentally sustainable city.

For this to be achieved, we must get the transport system right. It is essential that infrastructure planning is integrated with moving people and moving freight.
